Inside the Forbes True Crime Interview with Celebrity legal analyst Christopher C. Melcher
Widely recognized as one of the best family law attorneys in Los Angeles, California, celebrity lawyer Christopher C. Melcher provides a deep dive into ex-Olympian Ryan Wedding‘s case.
Key Takeaways from the Forbes True Crime Interview
In this exclusive breakdown, top family law attorney Christopher C. Melcher explores the high-stakes legal strategy behind Ryan Wedding’s surrender and the massive scope of the federal charges.
- The Strategy of Surrender:
Melcher explains that for an alleged “kingpin,” flipping on associates is difficult because there is often no one higher to implicate. Wedding likely surrendered to avoid the violence of a forced capture in Mexico and to secure a safer transition into U.S. custody. - Allegations of a Billion-Dollar Enterprise:
The DOJ and Attorney General Pam Bondi allege Wedding ran a criminal organization moving 60 tons of cocaine annually, netting over $1 billion a year. The operation reportedly utilized semi-trucks to transport narcotics from Mexico into Southern California and Canada. - The Shift from “Snowboarder” to “Kingpin”:
While initially skeptical of the “slacker snowboarder” narrative, Melcher notes that recent evidence—including the seizure of $40 million in high-end motorcycles—supports the scale of the alleged criminal wealth. - Violent Retaliation and Witness Tampering:
A critical component of the case involves allegations that Wedding ordered the murder of a witness in Colombia. Melcher highlights how these “disturbing allegations” illustrate the violent nature of the enterprise and explain why others may have been too terrified to cooperate with law enforcement previously.

Did Ryan Wedding Flip or Cooperate with FBI?
Brittany Lewis:
I can imagine when there’s a $15 million reward for any information about someone that could get people to start talking. But to your point about those talks between wedding and the FBI, he apparently reportedly voluntarily surrendered at the US Embassy and Mexico last week. And Vanity Fair reported he had these really intense talks between himself as well as the FBI before he was taken into US custody. So as an attorney, when you hear that, and I know that this is just conjecture, what exactly do you think? Are you thinking, Hey, he might’ve given valuable information, Hey, he might be an informant that potentially flipped. What does that really look like?
Why is it Hard for a Kingpin to Make a Deal?
Christopher Melcher:
Sure. So it’s hard for the kingpin to make a cooperation deal because if it’s true that he is the head of the organization, there’s no one greater than he can flip on. And that’s the kind of classic law enforcement technique is they work with the lower level people to flip on higher level associates in the organization to eventually get to the top.
Why Would Ryan Wedding Voluntarily Surrender?
So here, he didn’t have anything that he could give to the government other than himself, meaning turning himself in. And the incentive there for him to negotiate a deal would be potentially so he’s not killed while being captured like what happened to Pablo Escobar. The other incentive is that he doesn’t find himself sitting in a jail in Mexico, and so that he can go directly into captivity here in the United States, which all else being equal is going to be a lot better thing for him. So what I surmise from the reporting is, is that he knew his time was numbered, he was going to be captured, and he wanted to know where he was going to wind up and to get there safely.
Brittany Lewis:
I want to talk about the details here that the DOJ laid out, just how big and the scale of this operation. It allegedly was massive. Attorney General Pam Bondy. She held a press briefing on wedding November, 2025.
The Scale of the DOJ’s Billion-Dollar Case
She said he was responsible for running a billion dollars a year criminal enterprise that used semi-trucks to bring in drugs around 60 tons of cocaine a year from Mexico into the United States.
And she also accused him of controlling one of the most prolific and violent drug trafficking organizations in this world, who according to her and according to law enforcement, he was cooperating on working with in tandem the Sinaloa cartel. She also accused him and characterized him as being the largest distributor of cocaine in Canada. When you hear these details, first and foremost, how strong is the case against him?
What Evidence and Allegations Do They Have on Ryan Wedding?
Christopher Melcher:
Well, this is always something I think for all of us to remember is the difference between allegations and proof or truth. And it’s very easy for us to all get caught up in hearing an indictment or allegation even in civil cases and think like, wow, that must be true. And so as a defense attorney, I’m always skeptical. And then also to keep in mind that everyone’s presumed to be innocent in the United States until proven guilty. So when I first started hearing these allegations, I was like, how does this snowboarder, who I always kind of think of like a slacker kind of guy, do this now. Sure, he’s an Olympian. Maybe he’s so intense he could do that, but it was always like, okay, I’d like to see some evidence around this more than allegations. What I think changed my view a little bit or maybe confirmed things is when there was 40 million, I guess, of motorcycles that were seized last month and as part of an operation from the US Attorney’s office and that were seized in Mexico, and it’s like, wow, okay, so obviously he’s got a lot of cash to spend on motorcycles.
Christopher Melcher:
So it kind of looked like, yeah, maybe there’s a bigger operation.
Disturbing Allegations of Witness Retaliation
There was also the very disturbing allegations that a witness against him had been killed at his instruction at a restaurant in Columbia. And so that also just shows if true, the violent nature of this person and the operation and also would help explain why people might not have cooperated earlier based on the message really that was sent saying, Hey, if you’re a witness against me, this is what happens to you.
